东方网（Eastday.com）成立于2000年5月28日，2012年3月完成转企改制，是上海市市管国有控股企业，注册资本8.57亿元。目前东方网资本构成情况为上海市国有资产监督管理委员会控股、上海东方明珠（集团）股份有限公司等15家国有企业和媒体共同投资参股。东方网基本定位是地方重点新闻网站，上海市主流媒体之一，同时也是一家大型综合性网络文化公司。
东方网拥有120余个频道，中、英、日三个语种版本，每日更新图文和视频信息近2万条，业务涵盖新闻发布、舆论交互、数字政务、电子商务、市场广告、技术运营等多领域，并通过互联网、报纸、手机、移动电视、互动电视、楼宇电视、电子站牌等传播载体，实现影响力的立体覆盖，具备大型网站所有互动功能、多媒体新闻传送能力和直播能力。东方网是上海最具影响力、权威性和公信度的网络媒体。
截至目前，东方网Alexa全球排名620位，中文排名66位，居各地方新闻网站首位。2013年，东方网实现主营业务收入约4.62亿元；利润总额约 6500万元；总资产近15亿，净资产约12.71亿。在2013年中国互联网协会公布中国互联网企业100强名单中，东方网名列第80位，作为地方新闻网站第一次进入前百强。在第四届中国互联网品牌大奖评选中，东方网荣获了“中国十大新闻网站品牌奖”。近年来，东方网新闻报道作品多次荣获中国新闻奖、上海新闻奖等重要奖项。
东方网业务分为五大板块：一是打造以内容产品化、信息服务标准化为主体的媒体业务；二是以政府合作为基础的数字政务；三是以文化和民生为特征的电子商务；四是基于本地、社区、位置，旨在解决智慧城市“最后一公里”服务的智慧社区O2O业务；五是围绕主营业务市场拓展的投资业务。
2012年，东方网顺利完成东方网和下属城市导报社转企改制任务。转企改制后，东方网按照现代企业制度要求，创新体制机制，有力保证了包括媒体业务在内的各项主营业务拓展。2012年，设立东方网创新孵化基金，大力扶持与新媒体相关的员工创新项目。选择技术创新研发类团队，大胆探索期权激励机制，充分发挥优秀人才积极性。
