苏州大学坐落于素有“人间天堂”之称的古城苏州,是国家“211工程”重点建设高校和江苏省省属重点综合性大学,其前身为创建于1900年的东吴大学,目前已发展成为一所具有相当规模,基础较为雄厚,办学效益显著,在国内外具有一定知名度的地方综合性大学。

历史沿革

作为苏州大学的龙头学院之一,苏州大学文学院是在东吴大学文学系基础上发展起来的。1900年,美国监理会制定《东吴大学校董会章程》建立东吴大学,共设三个系科:文学系、神学系和医学系,为中国年轻人提供西方标准的大学教育。1908年,东吴大学的第一个毕业生获得了文学士学位证书。1919年,东吴大学被政府授予筹办“作为东吴大学一部分的吴语学校”。1920年,“吴语科”开办。1927年春,东吴大学文学院设中文、政治、经济、社会、历史等系。1950年秋,文学院文史系改为中国语文学系。1952年10月,苏南师范学院在东吴大学原址建院,设中国语文系、教育系、数学系、物理系、生物系、艺术系。1952年11月,苏南师范学院改名为江苏师范学院。1955年9月,中国语文系科调整到南京师范学院。1958年,江苏师范学院重建中国语文系,1982年更名为苏州大学中文系,1995年更名为苏州大学文学院,同时开始组建新闻传播系。1999年,文学院、社会学院、政治与管理学院合并组建苏州大学人文学院,文学院更名为人文学院中文系(新闻传播系)。2005年调整为苏州大学文学院·新闻传播学院。2009年,苏州大学在整合原文学院·新闻传播学院所属新闻传播学科专业的基础上,与香港凤凰卫视集团合作组建苏州大学凤凰传媒学院,撤销新闻传播学院。苏州大学文学院·新闻传播学院在划出新闻类专业和学科后更名为苏州大学文学院。

如今的苏州大学文学院坐落于苏州工业园区风景如画的独墅湖畔。

师资力量

在文学院一百多年的办学历史中,一批著名的学术大师曾在此执教,其中有黄人、章炳麟、吴梅、金叔远、唐文治、陈衍、王遽常、曹之弼、钱基博、吕思勉、周予同、蔡尚思、周谷城、胡曲园、朱东润、许国璋等人。学院师资力量雄厚,形成了一支由教授与副教授为主体的教学经验丰富、学术造诣深、梯队结构合理的教师队伍。学院现有在职教师68人,其中教授25人,副教授18人;高职人员比例逾七成;拥有博士生导师24人,硕士生导师32人。2008年,学院汉语言文学专业教学队伍获省级优秀教学团队称号。

学院拥有1个国家文科基础学科人才培养和科学研究基地,1个国家特色专业——汉语言文学。在原有中国古代文学、中国现当代文学、文艺学为省级重点学科的基础上,2008年中国语言文学一级学科被批准为省级重点学科。

院系设置

学院现有3个系科:中文系、对外汉语系、文秘系,1个海外教育中心,设有中国昆曲研究中心、比较文学研究中心、生态批评研究中心等10多个校级、院级研究所(室)。学院现有1个一级学科博士学位授权点——中国语言文学,设有1个博士后流动站,10个博士点(含方向);1个一级学科硕士学位授权点——中国语言文学,11个硕士点(含方向),1个专业学位硕士点。拥有汉语言文学、汉语言文学(师范)、汉语言文学(基地)、对外汉语、戏剧影视文学等5个本科专业与方向。多年来,学院教学与科研协调发展,为国家培养了万余名学子,在国内外产生了越来越大的影响。

A brief introduction to the School of Arts of Suzhou University

Suzhou University is located in the ancient city of Suzhou, which is known as “Paradise on Earth”. It is a key university built by the national “211 Project” and a key comprehensive university affiliated to Jiangsu Province. Its predecessor was Soochow University, which was founded in 1900. at present, it has developed into a local comprehensive university with considerable scale, solid foundation, remarkable school-running benefits and a certain popularity at home and abroad.

Historical evolution

As one of the leading colleges of Soochow University, the School of Arts of Soochow University developed on the basis of the Literature Department of Soochow University. In 1900, the American Supervisory Board formulated the Constitution of the Board of Governors of Soochow University to establish Soochow University, with three departments: literature Department, Theology Department and Medicine Department, to provide Chinese young people with western-standard university education. In 1908, the first graduate of Soochow University received a Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1919, Soochow University was awarded by the government to organize “Wu language School, which is part of Soochow University”. In 1920, “Wu language Section” was launched. In the spring of 1927, the School of Literature of Soochow University set up departments of Chinese, politics, economics, society, history and so on. In the autumn of 1950, the Department of Literature and History of the College of Arts was changed to the Department of Chinese language and Literature. In October 1952, Sunan normal University was established at the original site of Soochow University, with Chinese language Department, Education Department, Mathematics Department, Physics Department, Biology Department and Art Department. In November 1952, Sunan normal University changed its name to Jiangsu normal University. In September 1955, the Chinese Department was adjusted to Nanjing normal University. In 1958, Jiangsu normal University rebuilt the Chinese language Department, renamed it as the Chinese Department of Suzhou University in 1982, and changed its name to the School of Arts of Suzhou University in 1995. At the same time, it began to set up the Department of Journalism and Communication. In 1999, the School of Arts, the School of Social Sciences and the School of Politics and Management merged to form the School of Humanities of Suzhou University, which was renamed as the Chinese Department of Humanities (Department of Journalism and Communication). In 2005, it was adjusted to the School of Journalism and Communication, School of Arts, Suzhou University. In 2009, on the basis of integrating the journalism and communication major of the School of Journalism and Communication of the original School of Journalism and Communication, Suzhou University cooperated with Hong Kong Phoenix Satellite TV Group to establish the Phoenix School of Communication of Suzhou University and abolish the School of Journalism and Communication. The School of Journalism and Communication of the School of Arts of Soochow University changed its name to the School of Arts of Soochow University after delineating journalism majors and disciplines.

Today, the School of Arts of Suzhou University is located on the banks of the picturesque Dushu Lake in Suzhou Industrial Park.

Teachers’ strength

In the more than 100-year history of the College of Liberal Arts, a number of famous academic masters have taught here, including Huang Ren, Zhang Binglin, Wu Mei, Jin Shuyuan, Tang Wenzhi, Chen Yan, Wang Maochang, Cao Zhibi, Qian Jibo, Lu Simian, Zhou Yutong, Cai Shangsi, Zhou Gucheng, Hu Quyuan, Zhu Dongrun, Xu Guozhang and others. The faculty of the college is strong, and it has formed a team of teachers with rich teaching experience, deep academic attainments and reasonable echelon structure with professors and associate professors as the main body. The college now has 68 in-service teachers, including 25 professors and 18 associate professors; the proportion of higher vocational personnel is more than 70%; there are 24 doctoral supervisors and 32 master’s degree supervisors. In 2008, the teaching team of Chinese language and literature major in the college won the title of provincial excellent teaching team.

The college has a national base for personnel training and scientific research in basic liberal arts disciplines, and a major with national characteristics-Chinese language and literature. On the basis of the original ancient Chinese literature, modern and contemporary Chinese literature and literature and art as provincial key disciplines, the first-tier discipline of Chinese language and literature was approved as provincial key disciplines in 2008.

College and department setting

At present, the college has three departments: the Chinese Department, the Foreign language Department, the Secretary Department, and an overseas education center. There are more than 10 school-level and college-level research institutes (rooms), such as the China Kunqu Opera Research Center, the Comparative Literature Research Center, and the Ecological criticism Research Center. The college now has one first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization point– Chinese language and literature. There are 1 post-doctoral station, 10 doctoral programs (including direction), 1 master’s degree authorization point of first-tier discipline-Chinese language and literature, 11 master’s degree (including direction) and 1 professional master’s degree. It has 5 undergraduate majors and directions, such as Chinese language and literature, Chinese language and literature (normal), Chinese language and literature (base), Chinese as a foreign language, drama, film and television literature, etc. Over the years, the coordinated development of college teaching and scientific research has trained more than 10,000 students for the country, and has exerted more and more influence at home and abroad.
