2008年7月湛江市人民政府原则同意以湛江市第二中学为主体组建湛江二中教育集团。
学校现辖六个校区,其中总校区、湛江市二中海东中学、湛江二中港城中学(民办)为既有初中又有高中的完全中学;湛江二中崇文实验学校于2014年成立,承担完全小学教育;承担完全中学教育;承担升大补习教育;霞山校区为市直属公办初级中学;湛江市二中海东小学为唯一市直属小学。学校在校生1.7万人,教师780人(不含离退休人员),高级职称教师210人,中级职称教师440人,省级以上名师75人,硕士和研究生学历教师280人,占比35.9%,成为湛江市基础教育系统中教师学历水平最高的学校,语文、数学、英语、政治、物理、生物、历史、体育、音乐等九个学科教研组被评为“湛江市示范教研组”,全市最多。通过多年发展,各校区办学特色及区位优势明显,成绩突出,学校已经成为湛江市基础教育规模最大、师资最强、水平最好的龙头学校。

学校确立“质量、服务、品牌、竞争”为办学理念,提出“品牌立校、依典办校、民主治校、文化育校、科研兴校”管理理念,提出“一个都不能掉队”的质量理念和“善待学生的认知高度”的德育理念,形成了良好的校风,管理水平和教学质量高。学校注重全面发展,大力开展学生社团活动、创新教育竞赛活动。高考“三线”上线率居全市前列,培养出广东省高考总分或单科状元38人次,多次被评为“湛江市高考特等奖”单位。学校设施设备先进,教学仪器场馆按照国家级示范高中标准配置,学生宿舍、食堂、教室、办公用房全部安装了空调,多次承担省市各级重大赛事或研讨交流活动。2015年,湛江举行的广东省第十四届运动会中,我校独力承担了青少年竞技组射击、学校组篮球、足球、学校体育组科学论文报告会四项比赛工作。

2013届高三文汉强、施运豪分别荣获理、文科高考总分(不含政策性加分)全市第一。本科以上人数1775人,应届本科上线人数和上线率均为本市第一。高考总分600分以上233人,全市理科文科前10人中我校各占3人。2014年高考总上线人数2176人,总上线率98%。李嘉雯同学和黄家熙同学分别以文科总分640分和理科总分669分进入湛江市文、理科总分前五名。杨雯殊同学文科综合259分、英语科147分,均获湛江市第一名。2015年高考重点率、本科率和高分层实现五年大跨越。总校考取重点线456人,本科线1543人,总分600分以上213人,增幅81%,其中650分以上23人,增幅183%。单科亮点闪耀,语文科130分以上32人,增幅191%,理科数学135分以上26人,增幅73%,肖晗微理科数学第一名,理科综合250分以上156人,增幅350%。杨雅琳同学以文科总分633分进入湛江市前十名。海东中学重点完成率200%,本科完成率122%。港城中学本科上线人数增幅137%。崇文实验学校补习班重点线本科线全线飘红,重点人数从入学时的3人增加到55人,本科率达95.3%,周妙娣以文科630分成绩进入湛江市十名。该校学生今年高考成绩比他们去年高考成绩平均提高74.5分,最高提高268分。

学校“优秀+特长”的办学特色日益彰显,创新教育取得显著成果。多次获省田径传统项目学校运动会团体总分和金牌总数第一,全国高中学科竞赛、省科技创新大赛以及艺术等方面比赛中获得国家级、省级奖项一批。此外,教育科研课题亦多次获全国、省级奖项。

作为湛江市对外教育交流窗口单位,学校每年接待大批国内外来访团并开展教育教学交流活动。与澳大利亚凯恩斯市圣三一学校、俄罗斯谢乐普霍夫市第十二中学缔结友好学校,与英国、美国、加拿大、马来西亚、新加坡、越南和台北市等地的大学或中学建立良好的文化教育交流关系并开展交流活动。学校还与雷州、四川汶川、贵州荔波等薄弱学校开展对口帮扶支教活动,成效显著,并被省教育厅评为广东省义务教育“千校扶千校”工作先进集体,进一步扩大了示范辐射作用。
