上海交通大学从1931年起培养研究生，是国内最早招收研究生的大学之一。经国家批准，上海交通大学于1984年4月试办研究生院，并于1996年2月首批被批准正式成立研究生院。目前，已建立了哲学、经济学、法学、教育学、文学、历史学、理学、工学、农学、医学、军事学、管理学等全部12个学位门类的研究生培养体系。

上海交大拥有一支结构合理、素质优良、充满活力、可持续发展的师资队伍：截至2008年，有专任教师3135人，其中教授780人、副教授1458人、博士生导师1047名，中国科学院院士15名、中国工程院院士18名，两院院士1名，11名”973″首席科学家，“长江学者”特聘教授和讲座教授51名，国家杰出青年基金获得者46名，国家重点基础研究发展规划(973计划)首席科学家11名;学校现有49个全国重点学科，26个博士后流动站;先后有国务院学位委员会委员3人，国务院学位委员会学科评议组成员18人，其中2人担任学科评议组召集人。

Shanghai Jiaotong University, which has trained graduate students since 1931, is one of the earliest universities in China to recruit graduate students. With the approval of the state, Shanghai Jiaotong University established a graduate school on a trial basis in April 1984, and the first batch of graduate schools were approved in February 1996. At present, postgraduate training systems for all 12 degree categories, including philosophy, economics, law, pedagogy, literature, history, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, military science, and management, have been established.

Shanghai Jiaotong University has a faculty with reasonable structure, good quality, vitality and sustainable development: as of 2008, there were 3135 full-time teachers, including 780 professors, 1458 associate professors, 1047 doctoral supervisors, 15 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 18 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 1 academician of the two academies, 11 chief scientists, 51 specially appointed professors and chair professors of the Yangtze River Scholars. 46 winners of the National Outstanding Youth Fund and 11 Chief scientists of the National key basic Research and Development Program (973 Program) The school now has 49 national key disciplines and 26 postdoctoral mobile stations; there are 3 members of the academic degree Committee of the State Council and 18 members of the discipline Review Group of the academic degrees Committee of the State Council, 2 of whom serve as conveners of the discipline Review Group.
