中国旅行社始于1949年11月建立的厦门华侨服务社(即后来厦门中国旅行社),是新中国的第一家旅行社。后在北京成立中国旅行社总社。中国旅行社总社作为全国中旅社的龙头企业,经过六十多年的发展,由一家以接待华侨、外籍华人、港澳同胞、台湾同胞为主的旅行社,发展成为入境游、出境游、国内游三业并举,每年接待数十万中外游客的国际旅行社。

中国旅行社总社是中国最大的旅行社之一,创写了中国旅游行业的多项第一:首家接待外国旅游者,首家接待台湾同胞,首家经营中国公民出境游。“CTS中旅”商标荣获中国“驰名商标”称号,2002年度荣获中国十大公众认知商标,《中国旅游报》中国旅游知名品牌等殊荣。中国旅行社总社还曾于2002年、2004年荣获Travel
Weekly旅讯“中国最佳出境游旅行社”称号。2005年被“世界品牌实验室”评为“中国最具影响力品牌”,深得消费者的信赖。
