　　欧洲南方天文台(The European Southern
Observatory，缩写ESO)是属于政府制间组织的一个天文研究机构，成立于1962年，旨在研究南半球天文学，由15个国家组成和支援。

它是欧洲天文学家合作的国际性机构。主要观测设施建在位于智利圣地亚哥北600公里处的拉西亚山上，设有15米亚毫米波射电望远镜、3.6米反射望远镜、3.5米新技术光学望远镜、 1.52米摄谱望远镜、1米测光望远镜和1米施密特望远镜。研究领域有恒星、星系、星际物质、星系团、类星体、X射线天文学、γ射线天文学、射电天文学和天文仪器与技术方法等。 ESO实施一项雄心勃勃的计划集中在设计、建设和运营的地面观测设施使天文学家做出重大科学发现。 ESO也在推广中起着主导作用,在天文学研究的组织合作。

Observatory (ESO) is an astronomical research institute of the intergovernmental organization, established in 1962 to study astronomy in the southern hemisphere, composed and supported by 15 countries.

The main observation facility is located on Mount Lacia, 600km north of Santiago, Chile, with 15 Mya millimeter radio telescope, 3.6m reflection telescope, 3.5m new technology optical telescope, 1.52m spectrographic telescope, 1m photometric telescope and 1m Schmidt telescope. The research fields include stars, galaxies, interstellar matter, galaxy clusters, quasars, X-ray astronomy, γ-ray astronomy, radio astronomy and astronomical instruments and techniques. ESO implements an ambitious plan to design, build and operate ground observation facilities that enable astronomers to make major scientific discoveries. ESO also plays a leading role in the promotion, organizing and cooperating in astronomical research.
