　　扩建工程持续六年之久，耗资3.5亿美元，总面积20.4万平方英尺，首次将三座博物馆聚集在一个屋檐下，并新建有一个特展画廊和三个小型大学画廊，被誉为是2014年最受期待的建筑之一。新建筑最大的特点是光线与通透度，这也是皮亚诺这位意大利建筑师最重要的设计特征，展示了意大利建筑文雅的特点。

　　皮亚诺认为，透明度是都市生活的重要的特征，都市氛围是在建筑物与街道的对话互动中营造的。工程增加了40%的展览空间，除去一个有300个座位的剧院，还有多个教室、小书房与文物保藏中心。空间高阔的画廊用于容纳超大型的当代艺术作品，还有一块为数字作品预留的展示空间。在新建筑体内，观众可以进行与展品相关的新研究，探讨身在博物馆内产生的新观念，瞥见工作中的修复人员，访问独一无二的艺术研究中心，并享有观看丰富藏品的第一手经验。

The project has increased exhibition space by 40%, including a 300-seat theatre, a number of classrooms, small studies and cultural relics preservation centers. The spacious galleries are used to accommodate super-large works of contemporary art, as well as a display space reserved for digital works.
