The Biscupin Archaeological Museum is the most famous open-air archaeological reserve in Poland. In the 1830s, the remains of an ancient defensive fortress built by the Lusatian were found on a peninsula of Lake Biscupine. The swampy fortress, estimated to have been built between 750 and 400 BC, is the oldest defensive settlement found in Europe. In those days, there were about 1200 people in this important city. They are engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry and trade, which may have been damaged by the past invasions of Iran’s nomadic Ski people.

Because the surrounding swamps protect these wooden buildings, the base remains the same as it was 2,400 years ago. The original part of the fortress was successfully rebuilt under the hard work of the archaeologists. Archaeologists try to restore the architecture and atmosphere to the same as before. The whole peninsula is full of historical exhibits, and within the fence there is a road covered with oak and pine trunks, with large thatched cabins on both sides, so visitors can go in and have a look.

Every September, thousands of tourists gather in Biscupin for the archaeological rally, which is the biggest event in the Polish archaeological community. Here you can learn ceramic making, crossbow shooting, lighting, basket weaving, or canoeing. This is also a good opportunity to discover the mysteries of archaeology. Archaeologists will tell you how to reorganize antique fragments and how to calculate its age from a piece of debris.
