　　丹麦皇家图书馆由弗里德里克三世奠基于1648年，1673年在克里斯蒂安堡(现在的议会)对面一座适合当图书馆的建筑物中开馆。1661—1664年间，弗里德里克三世还得到4座私人图书馆，其藏书(主要为罗曼语)构成皇家图书馆的核心。在18世纪，馆藏的增加主要靠购买私人藏书、礼品和战争掠夺。在18世纪末，图书馆性质有了改变，成为一个学术性的国家图书馆。

　　20世纪90年代，皇家图书馆的三座图书馆宗旨有所变化。菲奥尔斯塔德的图书馆强调社会科学;阿迈厄的校园图书馆强调人文学科——语言、文学、历史、哲学、法学、考古和艺术等;而位于斯劳兹赫尔姆的主馆则兼收并蓄，覆盖所有科目。

The Royal Library of Denmark is a library built for the 21st century. Located on Slotsholmen Island in the historic city of Copenhagen, it consists of two parts: new construction and renovation. Its design is considered to be different from the traditional library structure because it embraces a variety of different cultural institutions. This innovative idea originated from the cultural concept of the European architecture competition in 1993.

The Royal Library of Denmark was founded by Frederick III in 1648 and opened in 1673 in a suitable library building opposite Fort Christian (present-day Parliament). Between 1661 and 1664, Frederick III also acquired four private libraries, whose collections (mainly romantic) formed the core of the Royal Library. In the 18th century, the increase in collection was mainly through the purchase of private collections, gifts and war plunder. At the end of the 18th century, the nature of the library changed and became an academic national library.

In the 1990s, the purposes of the three libraries of the Royal Library changed. The library in Fiorstad emphasizes the social sciences; the campus library in Ameer emphasizes the humanities-language, literature, history, philosophy, law, archaeology and the arts; and the main library in Slaushelm is eclectic. covers all subjects.

The compilation of a complete national bibliography can prove which publications have been received by the National Library, and the Danish national bibliography is carried out in cooperation with two institutions: the Danish Book Centre and the Royal Library.
