Capture the Atlas

The earth is about 26000 light-years from the center of the Milky way. Seen from an unknown spiral arm, the Milky way’s core looks like a glowing cluster of stars, partially obscured by clouds of dust and gas in the universe, seemingly drawing an arc in the night sky. Match it with the beautiful landscape of the earth, and you will have a gorgeous picture.

Capture the Atlas’s annual photography competition celebrates the art of photography in the Galaxy. The judges considered not only the quality of the image itself, but also the story behind the shoot and how effective it was in motivating other would-be celestial photographers to pick up their cameras and go to dark and quiet places to try their luck.

This year’s award-winning work was shot by 25 photographers from 14 different countries with landscapes from 12 countries. including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, Argentina, Chile, Egypt, France, Spain, Slovenia and Slovakia.

One of the highlights of this year is “House of Lavender” filmed by Benjamin Barakat in France. A pink Milky way shrouded a lavender field, and natural lines drew people’s attention to a lonely hut in the center.

The details of the Milky way galaxy are dotted with a glimmer of light from the meteor shower in “Perseid Meteor Shower on Mangart Saddle,” a photograph by Uro Qing Fink. The work was filmed in the Julian Alps in Slovenia.
