Slide design matters. It can make your argument more persuasive, help others learn more quickly, build your brand, and even help you sell. But the majority of us are not designers and we don’t have the time to labor over slide colors, fonts, layouts and images. That’s why we’ve been working to create so many free
presentation templates
for you, and why we’re launching a series of “Slide Makeover” blog posts.

In this series we’ll take a typical PowerPoint slide design and give it a quick refresh. The refresh isn’t meant to be a “designer refresh”, but reflects improvements that most any person can make to their slides. Check out the slide makeover below. All of these slide makeovers will be made available in the SlideRocket Templates library in case you see one you’d like to “steal”.

Have a slide you’d like us to consider including in the next slide design makeover? Simply post a link to it below in the Comments.

Slide Design – BEFORE

This slide I think represents a very typical PowerPoint slide design. See below for the makeover.

Slide Design – AFTER

3 big improvements were made.

  1. The color / layout
  2. Metaphor
  3. The flow

The colors and general layout with the toothed edge I think are more innovative, and maybe even surprising for viewers. That’s a good thing. But it’s the metaphor of using the silhouettes of actual landmarks that is the real winner here. Also the dates are a bit larger which is important to the narrative of this slide. One rule we adhered to was that we wouldn’t touch the text content of the slide, and that’s a big area of potential further improvement. By cutting the amount of text each landmark could instead have a title, and maybe a subtitle, which would help categorize them, point to an overall theme/message and keep the audience from trying to read all the details. Those details should instead be read by the presenter. On the design side, it’s possible that sticking to more of a timeline template could have worked. So, perhaps that metaphor could have been added to the landmarks. But again, the goal was a quick refresh.

See the BEFORE and AFTER of more slides in action below, along with other slide makeovers we’ll be covering in future posts. Have a slide you’d like to have us make over? Simple post a link to it in the comments below and we’ll see if we can help! And this presentation is available in the SlideRocket Templates library for all users to use.
