The South Korean memory giant has accelerated its R & D spending on cutting-edge logic processes (5nm and below) to enhance competition with TSMC. In 2021, 21 semiconductor suppliers spent more than $1 billion on research and development, compared with 19 in 2020. Total R & D spending by the top 10 companies increased 18 per cent to $52.6 billion, accounting for about 65 per cent of total R & D in the industry.
