近年来，我国的国产操作系统逐渐普及，但在一些核心技术上尚待突破，“开放麒麟”开发者平台将通过开放操作系统源代码的方式，让更多的开发者共同参与国产开源操作系统的开发。

据悉，“开放麒麟”基于麒麟软件数十年的操作系统研发成果、十多年的开源社区开发和建设经验，联合国家工信安全中心、普华基础软件、中科方德、麒麟信安、凝思软件、一铭软件、中兴新支点、元心科技、中国电科32所、技德系统、北京麟卓、先进操作系统创新中心等产业同行，共同建设。
中国工程院沈昌祥院士、倪光南院士、桂卫华院士、郑纬民院士、王耀南院士、廖湘科院士，中国科学院王怀民院士等科学巨匠，都高度肯定了“开放麒麟”对我国的战略意义。
