For four decades, Microsoft has merged into a household name and a major force in computer evolution. PC Magazine reporter Wendy Sheehan Donnell now interviews former Microsoft CEO Gates to compare the ideas of a young software maker with the realities of today’s modern computing world.

During the interview, Donnell and Gates talked about Gates’ early bid for “PC Magazine”, artificial intelligence and its role in tackling climate change and political polarization, as well as the daily carrying technology of the former CEO.

At the beginning of the interview, Donnell reviewed Gates’ dream 40 years ago, that is, the goal of “having a computer on every desk in every family.”

We know that the miraculous progress of chips and the software that can be built because of these miraculous chips will make everyone want to use computers. Later, we talked about the information on our fingertips. Of course, with the advent of mobile phones and sensors, it has gone beyond this original dream. But it still goes back to so much important work that was driven by chips and great software.

As for Gates’ purchase of PC Magazine magazine, he thought about the idea that computing would surpass amateurs and data processors and saw the publication as a bridge to a wider audience.

Judging from his 550th issue of magazines and his 40-year career, Gates is right to think that PC Magazine will play a long-term and key role in computing.

Donnell and Gates also discussed the question of “what is the biggest technical challenge in the next 40 years and how will we overcome it?” Gates simply pointed out artificial intelligence.

There is no technical tool to solve this problem, but the way we connect and interact with each other is closely related to the way information flows around the world.

With artificial intelligence, there is great potential to bring benefits to the world, but be careful to ensure that it develops in the right way. Microsoft and OpenAI have a smart approach to this.

While the whole interview is fascinating to fans of history, technology and business tycoons, perhaps the most interesting part is when Donnell questions the technology Gates actually uses, not just theories that will help in the future.

Although Surface Duo is the spiritual successor to Microsoft’s Courier concept, Gates chose Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 as his phone and used both Surface Laptop 4 and Surface Studio 2 to do his work inside and outside the home office.

I prefer to use computers with large screens than most people, because I like to send long emails, read long documents and research papers. I’m not as mobile-centric as the younger generation, but this combination works well. I can keep all my work at the foundation, even when I travel. These tools are getting better and better, but they still have a long way to go and have great potential.

At the end of the interview, Gates recalled that the programming code has become so large and widespread that it will be difficult for today’s computer users to accept the hardware and software restrictions of the past. “We are now spoiled-our computers are so incredible,” he said. “
