With a little help from worldwide megastars, a Countdown queen, a football legend, and some unexpected guests along the way, Shell is collaborating with others to work towards creating a future with access to more and cleaner energy for all.

From Santa Marta to Lagos, #makethefuture is the movement that’s bringing sustainable, innovative solutions to communities with limited electricity access. With over 1 billion people still without access to energy, it’s time we all took the step to make a change and Shell are aiming to lead the way. Stimulating conversation and inspiring the next generation of energy entrepreneurs is at the heart of all things #makethefuture — after all, it’s the bright young minds of the next generation that will lead us forward.
Shell are not only looking to stimulate the conversation around energy access and how we can create a future that’s safe for us all; they have been busy putting showcased energy ideas into action across the world. The #makethefuture movement started in 2014 in one of Rio’s favelas with Pavegen and Pele, and in 2015 moved on to Lagos, Nigeria, where a collaboration with musical superstar Akon launched another football pitch that’s powered by the kinetic energy from the feet that run across it . Currently #makethefuture can be found in Kenya, where GravityLight are rolling out their invention to curb the use of dangerous kerosene lamps and simultaneously provide reliable lighting to homes and businesses in energy poor villages across the country. In 2017, #makethefuture will continue on making a positive change in Brazil, where Insolar are harnessing the power of the plentiful sun to bring sustainable lighting to community areas of favela. Shell supports a range of energy startups in their mission to make the future a brighter, safer place with abundant access to clean energy. The bright sparks from bio-bean , GravityLight and Pavegen are among these startups, highlighting the potential of processes as simple as waste recycling, the force of gravity and a little bit of walking to revolutionise the energy space, bringing safe, clean energy to all corners of our home planet.
