Why is Windows 10 Mobile still a 32-bit OS when Android and iOS have long been onthe 64-bit train? Everyone in mobile has access to64-bit kit, so why should Microsoft’s software limit what people can do, especially when RAM counts are breaking 6GB these days?

Well, Windows Phone and Windows Mobile have traditionally beenmemory sippers and its ecosystem has been small enough to keep consumption tamped. It’s partly why you only see 4GB of it on the HP Elite x3— that’s the upper limit on a 32-bit smartphone, at least for Windows.
During the Microsoft Ignite conference, though, the company made it clear that it knows that it will need Windows 10 Mobile to take advantage of cheaper, faster memory.
“We don’t support [64-bit] today and I don’t have an announcement to make,” said Jason Whitehorn of Microsoft’s Windows and Devices Group. “But I acknowledge that that’s an important gap that we’re very aware of.”
In the meantime, Continuum features will get an updatesoon enough, with multiple window capability, resizability and the ability to pin apps to the taskbar. Perhaps more RAM could be useful in making that experience fluid, but we shall see how things play out in the coming days.
The company was asked several times at the panel about a potential future phone, the Surface Phone, but all Whitehorn would say was that Microsoft remained committed to mobile and to serving its OEMs.
